Sir Christopher Wren

Architect of St Paul's cathedral

Wren was already working on the old St Pauls that had lost its spire when struck by lightning in 1561 reconstruction in progess when the Great Fire of 1666 completely destroyed the building. The religious authorities favoured a spire but Wren influenced by Italy favoured a dome a design that attracted royal approval so unknown to the clergy Wren pressed ahead with new St Paul's without a spire. It is said that he designed St Martins church with a spire that can be seen in the foreground ( image above) he claims gives the illusion of protruding from the dome. In that way he agued that he had complied with the church council requirement  but all the same he achieved his dome.

Shopping for Christmas presents is underway in Oxford Street, Knightsbridge and the Strand( see above Christmas lights) and office staff parties are easily spotted in restaurants and tapas bars by the array of silly coloured paper hats  to balance the sensible seating

The seasonal tree is to be seen everywhere as are Christmas decorations though the very best are in Trafalgar Square with Admiral Lord Nelson keeping a watchful eye
